OKLAHOMA CITY – Management consultant Ken Tucker has a key question he will ask the 100 or so individuals who will attend his workshop Tuesday at the Riverwind Casino: Are you fascinated?

Tucker, formerly with the Gallup organization, said that is an important question when it comes to productivity, relationship building and self-worth.
“The fascinated manager gets different results from those who are not fascinated,” Tucker said. He said the same holds true for employees.

Even fascination with a book or something else that holds their interest boils over into the work lives of people, he added.

Tucker said 25 percent to 28 percent of U.S. employees are fascinated with their work and have an emotional attachment to their jobs. He said another 55 percent to 57 percent are cruising and are emotionally distracted in their jobs. He describes another 16 percent or so as “employee terrorists,” individuals who are not attached to their jobs and are actually frustrated at work.

Tucker said that fascinated managers are expert “people pickers.” “We’ll show them how to do that,” he said of the workshop. When it comes to employees, Tucker said workshop attendees will be given a framework for how to be fascinated in their jobs. He said there are three places where employees become fascinated with their jobs. “Those three places are when their promise is met, when their prize is realized and when the price is right within their jobs,” Tucker said. “We will give them the tools to understand that.” Tucker said every job makes promises, whether to an employer, worker or customers. By prize, he means the unique positive aspects of a particular position, by price it costs. “Fascinating employees have their promise, prize and price intersecting in a sweet combination of engagement,” he said. Tucker said workshop attendees will receive a manual, workbook, DVD and other materials.

“People live a greater degree of fascination, they live fascinated lives, when who they are meant to be intersects with what they’re meant to do,” Tucker said. He has been doing management consulting work for more than a decade, and has also been a researcher and author. He is scheduled to give a workshop in Oklahoma City in February. His consulting firm is located in Reston, Virginia
